Storage Instructions for Medications, Vitamins, and Supplements

Follow the general guidelines below when storing compounded and/or manufactured medications:

  • Follow specific instructions from your pharmacist:
Store compounded and manufactured medications at a controlled room temperature between 68°F to 77°F unless otherwise specified by your pharmacist. Refer to instructions on the label or to the pharmacist’s guidance regarding storage as some medications have different storage requirements. Some temperature excursions are permitted. However, do not take any medication that has experienced a temperature excursion without first consulting with your pharmacist.
  • Refrigeration storage:
Some medications, such as suspensions or suppositories, require refrigeration. Proper refrigerated temperature for storage is 36°F to 46°F. For medications requiring refrigerated storage, place them in the body of the refrigerator, not the door.
  • Select a cool, dry place:
Store medications in a cool, dry place away from heat and moisture. Some location options may include a pantry, cabinet, or closet. Avoid heat or moisture sources such as windows, stoves, kitchens or bathrooms.
  • Keep mediation in original container:
Medications are typically dispensed in child resistant packaging, with few exceptions. Keep medications in their original containers and out of reach of children and pets. This also ensures the integrity of the medication and keeps labeling intact. Do not remove cotton balls or desiccant packets.
  • Protect from light:
Keep all medications out of direct sunlight.
  • Sealed prescription containers:
Keep all prescription containers tightly sealed when not in use to discourage unnecessary moisture from entering the container.
  • Expired medications:
Never use expired medications. Dispose of all medications properly. Some pharmacies offer drug take back days. Check with your local pharmacist about service availability.
