What is a generic?

Generic drugs are copies of brand-name drugs that have exactly the same dosage, intended use, effects, side effects, route of administration, risks, safety, and strength as the original drug. In other words, their pharmacological effects are exactly the same as those of their brand-name counterparts.

Why are generics cheaper?

Generics are cheaper because the companies that manufacture the generic medications do not have to cover the hundreds of millions of dollars (sometimes billions) to develop, test and market a new drug. All the expensive work getting a new drug to market is done. The generic manufacturers just take the proven formula and mass-produce it at pennies of the original cost.

Why has the price dropped recently for Viagra® and Cialis®?

Because Viagra® and Cialis® were finally able to go generic! Right now there are two manufacturers for generic sildenafil (and hopefully more on the way). In 2013, generic manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals reached a settlement that allowed them to manufacture generic sildenafil starting on December 11th, 2017. Until recently, Teva was set up to be the sole manufacturer for generic Viagra® until 2020, when the brand name patent expires.

However, Viagra® manufacturer Pfizer announced that they would also be releasing generic sildenafil, at a significantly reduced price. Ultimately this move will enable Pfizer to share in the profits of generic sildenafil. This competition is the driving force behind the dropping of the price.
